Some of the main duties of a registered nurse include preparing and administering immunizations, giving basic patient care, bathing and dressing patients, determining appropriate treatment and follow up care, and coordinating further healthcare procedures with patients and their healthcare providers. Many people choose to become a Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse after high school. However, there are a few individuals who choose to begin their career training for an LPN prior to graduating from high school or any other educational institution. This often occurs when individuals want to change careers and are unable to find a job in their current field of interest.

Becoming an LPN is a great way for individuals to get their foot into the doors of the nursing field. To become an LPN, an individual must successfully complete a four-year degree program that includes courses in basic human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biology, medical terminology, radiology, and related subjects. Students also will learn how to administer medication, provide basic patient care, assess patients’ conditions, and instruct related professionals.

After completing the coursework required to qualify as an LPN, students can either pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program. Online courses and college-based programs are available to help students obtain their degrees. Students will need to pass the NCLEX-PN test to gain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Earning a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree requires students to complete a variety of course work including basic nursing care science, interpersonal skills, basic patient care, pharmacology, nursing practices, safety practices, first aid, and psychological aspects of patient care. Traditional face-to-face lectures require a student to be at the front of the class with the rest of the students, listening to and understanding the instructor’s lectures. Online courses do not require one to physically be present. Although there are some courses that require one to be at a specific location, most of the lectures are recorded or distributed over the Internet so that members of the class can view them at any time, from any location.
